A battle for a person’s soul in the endless war between God and the Devil. Tales of exorcisms and demonic possessions have always been a fascinated points of scary interest amongst individuals. The idea of believing that particular individual being possessed by an unholy spirit and seeing a priest (or other religious authority figure) summoning the strength and courage to banish the being from the conjugate physical form has been the stuff of nightmares. And yet, this particular practice of holy rites has been accounted many times throughout the ages. Accounts of such individuals under the influence of possession have varied, yet all speak of a malevolent force behind such acts, with the Prince of Darkness (Satan) feeding such demonic presence within a person. A SEQUEL THAT’S CUTE,
YET NOT MAGICIAL ENOUGH
In 2007, Walt Disney Studios released Enchanted, a fantasy musical comedy, that seemed to riff on the fairy tale-esque and signature ideas that Disney had employed in their animated classics. Directed by Kevin Lima, the film, which starred Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, and Susan Sarandon, follows a young girl named Giselle, an animated fairy tale princess from the magical world of Andalasia, who gets exiled into the live-action world of New York City and befriends one Robert Phillip, who shows the new world and falls in love with. Enchanted went on to be critically praised for its overall execution widely and critically, with many giving praises to the film’s direction, parody-esque outlook on fairy tale cliches (most from Disney themselves), the visual presentation, the music / songs, and the cast, especially in Adams’s performance, which established her as leading
A SOULESS REMAKE THAT’S
AS WOODEN AS PINOCCHIO
On February 23rd, 1940, Walt Disney Studios released Pinocchio, their second animated feature film that was based off of 1883 Italian children’s novel “The Adventures of Pinocchio” by Carlo Collodi. Directed by Ben Sharpsteen and Hamilton Luske (as well as sequence directors Bill Roberts, Norman Ferguson, Jack Kinney, Wilfred Jackson, and T. Hee), the film’s plot centered around a wooden puppet named Pinocchio, who was magically brought to life by the Blue Fairy after hearing of a wish from the woodcarver Geppetto who wanted his creation to become a real boy. The movie follows the various adventures that Pinocchio goes on, with his steadfast talking cricket conscience named Jimmy Cricket to keep on the moral path of what is right and what is wrong.
